Pure Acai

By · Comments (0)

People have asked me about pure acai.  Typically, people inquire about the health of pure acai as well as where to get it.

First I’ll address the purity, then where to get it.  The best acai is pure.  Folks, acai is a berry / fruit, and it is natural.  Like any other berry, acai is best in its natural pure form.  So why all the fuss over the mixes, powders, and pills?  Simple… the acai berry has a short shelf life and it is typically grown in the rainforests of Brazil.  If you can get it pure, by all means, drink up and enjoy the benefits!  Most of us, however, must obtain it in a dehydrated form in order to get it in a usable state.  Acai is best in the purest form, yet it still provides tremendous benefit in the other marketed forms.  If you do not know where to get it, here is a link to a free trial for a quality brand.  If you live in Brazil or other parts of South America, you should be able to get pure acai.

To your health, or as they say in Brazil:  saúde!  (pronounced “sah-oo-jee”)

The Acai Berry

The acai berry is round and smaller than a grape and is usually dark purple in color.  Acai berries can also be green, depending upon its’ species and maturity.  Acai berries are attached by a small stem to the vine of the acai tree.  The acai berry itself is about one inch (2.54 centimeters) in diameter.

Each acai berry has one large seed in the center.  Acai berries are mostly seed.  The large seed takes up about 80% or more of the berry.  The remainder of the acai berry is pulp and skin. The skin is the potent part of the acai berry and the seed is not used.  The skin is smooth, similar to a grape.

The indigenous people of the Amazon have been harvesting acai berries and have used them for years to maintain a long and healthy life.  Acai has been a mainstay of their diet, comprising up to 42% of their food intake by weight.

The acai berry has a very short shelf life of only 24 hours after picking.  It is for this reason that acai is immediately processed into powders, pills, and other supplements, and it is also for this reason that actual acai berries are expensive and difficult to obtain outside of its growing regions.

The Acai Cluster

Acai berries grow in clusters like the way grapes do.  However acai berry clusters are much larger and usually contain around 600 to 900 berries per cluster.  The clusters hang down from small branches that protrude about 90 degrees off the trunk of the acai tree.  As the acai berries grow, the clusters become heavy and begin to sag.

The Acai Tree

The acai tree is a species of a palm tree (Euterpe Oleracea) and there are eight species that grow native to Central and South America.  The acai tree is usually found growing in swamps and floodplains.  Acai palm trees are tall, and usually grow from 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 meters) and the leaves grow to about 10 feet (3 meters).

Acai berry clusters tend to grow high on the trees, and therefore acai berries are hard to harvest due to the height and the relatively smooth trunk of the trees.  Acai trees produce about 50 lbs (23 kilograms) of berries per crop, and produce two crops per year.

I’ve added some new links to stories and articles about Acai.  Believe me, this is not easy.  There are thousands of articles out there, and it took hours to filter through them to find real articles by credible sources.  You wouldn’t believe how many websites I found with “fake” articles that people create just to sell product.  You won’t get any of that bs on this site.  I am going to build a page on acai website scams to help protect you from the garbage that is out there.  I will not endorse any products, I’ll just give you the cold hard facts.  Check out the articles here.  If you have links to articles that are legitimate, let me know and I will post a link to them as well – but they must be from credible sources on a credible website.

Enjoy!
